About project:

“The expat experience of the American-Bosnian writer Aleksandar Hemon, which he describes in his autobiographical essays collected in the book The Book of My Lives, may have a happy ending, but that doesn't say much about it. In his new American life, Hemon too had to face the loss of his world, his own invisibility in a big, foreign city, the consequent devaluation and dehumanization of all his own. In the painful process of building a new self, he, too, often felt humiliated, scared, lonely and angry, and above all, misunderstood. He eventually succeeded, and in his new life, Aleksandar Hemon is a successful American writer, and Chicago is his home, but his story is still easily recognisable to many whose expat experiences do not have a happy ending.

Ivana Djilas is one of those who can recognize herself in Hemon’s story, so the performance The Book of My Lives is also a personal confession of the director, who, with the help of the writer’s emigration stories, tells her own.”

Goran Vojnović

O projektu:

“At the end of 2022, there were 108.4 million displaced people in the world. Every month, there are more and more hotspots in the world due to conflict or poverty. More and more people are leaving their homes due to climate change. We are currently relocating entire villages in Slovenia due to floods and landslides. In almost every school we have Russian and Ukrainian children, as well as children from the Balkans, from the former Yugoslav countries. An ageing population and labour shortages will lead to increased migration. The topic of migration and the integration of displaced persons into a new environment is a topic that we will encounter more and more often. And that's my theme. I know what it's like to be invisible. I know what it's like when it doesn't matter whether you get out of bed in the morning or not, because nobody notices. I know what it's like to wonder if you did the right thing to leave your city, your country, wandering the streets without money or context. It's time for me to make a performance about these feelings. And Alexander Hemon wrote a book that I wanted to write, but I didn't know how to write. The book of my lives.”

Ivana Djilas

Staranje prebivalstva in pomanjkanje delovne sile bo pripeljalo do povečanih migracij. “

About author:

Ivana Djilas was born on June 25, 1976, in Belgrade. Between 1995 and 1999, she attended the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade, where she graduated as a theater and radio director under the mentorship of Nikola Jevtić. In Serbia, she directed only one play – The Zoo Story by Edward Albee, which remained on the program of Atelje 212 for seven years. She pursued postgraduate studies at the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television in Ljubljana and completed her Master's degree under the mentorship of Dušan Jovanović in 2007, with a thesis titled "Visualization of a Novel – An Alternative Approach to Staging a Novel in Theatre." She now lives in Ljubljana as a self-employed person in the cultural sector. Ivana Djilas has dedicated most of her theatrical career to working in Slovenian theatre. She has directed in many professional theaters and theatre groups, and in 2004, she also became the head and producer of the theatre group Familija. Over more than twenty years of work in Slovenia, she has directed around eighty productions, which have been created in a variety of production conditions, mostly in collaboration with dramaturg Tatjana Doma, but always with the distinctive poetic style of a director whose signature is clearly recognizable. She has directed plays based on a wide range of materials, from modern and classical drama, novels, short stories, poems, picture books, comics, newspaper columns, to even scientific texts. These genre-diverse productions are full of intertwining with puppetry techniques, video, and live music. As evidenced by her Master's thesis, she is interested in the adaptation and visualization of novels, and several of her works in the repertoire have been based on this approach: Fužinski Bluz by Andrej Skubic and adapter Ana Lasić, Mr. Chance by Jerzy Kosinski and adapter Tatjana Doma, The Notebook by Agota Kristof, Candidate or Optimism, adapted in collaboration with Tatjana Doma, and the dramatization of the novel in letters Sahib – Impressions from Depression by Nenad Veličković.

She was enrolled in a doctoral program at the Faculty of Education in Ljubljana, in the field of Educational Sciences, writes articles, and participates in scientific conferences. She explores the possibilities of collaboration between the field of theater and education. She is interested in everything from the accessibility of theater for children, experiencing theater, transmitting cultural and social patterns through art, to the concepts of integrating theater into the process of education. She also edited a collection of essays titled Growing Audience – Eight Essays on the Role of Theater for Children and Youth in Contemporary Society. In 2017, she published a novel titled The House with the publisher Mladinska knjiga.

O avtorici:

Žanrsko različne predstave so polne prepletanj z lutkovnimi tehnikami, videom in živo glasbo.
Raziskuje možnosti sodelovanja gledališkega polja in polja edukacije.
