About project:

KOORD emerges from the daily rhythm of shared practices and gestures rooted in manual labour. Through repetition, these movements become threads in a living archive of collective memory: They reawaken embodied traces of past temporalities as we continually move through the present. At its core, the piece is an exploration of coexistence. It asks how we might step out of the relentless acceleration of modern life and reconnect to a perception of the world shaped by cycles, proximity, presence, and seasonal time. What forms of attention become possible when we slow down enough to sense each other differently? KOORD is not a call for sameness. It does not seek unity through shared ideology, identity, or belief. Instead, it proposes a shared action of difference. A fragile and persistent act of moving alongside one another. In a time marked by fracture, division, and renewed borders, the work asks how we might remain together without becoming the same.

KOORD is a choreographic research project that activates traces of collective embodied memory through both Slovenian traditional craft gestures and universal collective practices. The work departs from the idea that the body is not only a medium of expression but an archive. A living site where movement practices, cultural techniques, and shared histories sediment over generations.

Drawing from phenomenology, body memory theory, and contemporary discourse on embodied cognition, the project creates a space where dancers engage with these past movement principles embedded with weight-shift, repetition, rhythm, and whole-body focus. These movements are treated not as ethnographic material to be reproduced but as typological seeds from which new movement languages emerge.

This work is part of a longer research project exploring how embodied communal practices, rooted in cultural and ritual contexts, carry forms of memory within the body. By transforming traditional practices through repetition and attention, the research activates layers of ancestral knowledge, reshaping how we perceive time, space, and the collective.

As the dancers move, the audience is invited to enter this space with them, to feel the weight, rhythm, and presence as a shared, embodied journey. In this environment, each viewer participates in the unfolding movements, co-creating the present moment. In this way, the project offers both a deep dive into inherited cultural memory and a reimagination of shared movement and space today.

About artists:

Beno Novak (1991, Slovenia) is a dancer, choreographer and educator whose work explores personal and collective experience through strong physicality, sensitivity, and embodied research. He completed his Master’s degree in Embodied Research at the University of Antwerp (2025), following his studies at SEAD in Salzburg and further training at Tisch School of the Arts in New York and The Place in London. As a performer he has collaborated with artists such as Gary Clarke, Deborah Hay, Matej Kejžar, and others, while developing his own choreographic works, including GROM, Echoes of the Body, and Ressurect 2.0. Alongside his artistic practice, he directs the Summer Intensive Festival in Portugal, teaches internationally through his Zero Space Method, and continues to explore collective embodied memory through collaborative and interdisciplinary work.

Alja Branc Barbosa (1994, Slovenia) is a dancer, choreographer, and educator based between Ljubljana and Budapest. She graduated from the SVŠGUGL High School for Contemporary Dance and earned her degree at the Budapest Contemporary Dance Academy. August Adrian Braatz (1993, Germany) was born in Berlin, Germany, into a family of artists and has lived in Ljubljana, Slovenia, since childhood. His passion for music began early; he trained in classical piano at France Šturm School and later studied music production at SAE Institute Ljubljana. He pursued film direction at AGRFT, where he began composing music for films. Today, as a freelance composer and director, he creates scores for film, theater, and modern dance, blending electronic music with live instrumentation, spanning genres from drama to sci-fi.

Aljoša Lovrić Krapež (1998, Slovenia) graduated in 2021 with a BA in Dramaturgy and Performing Arts from AGRFT, receiving the University Prešeren Award for his thesis, "Weltschmerz." He then began a master's in Directing for Object and Material Theatre at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. His production "Under Construction" won multiple awards at the 2023 Slovenian Puppet Creators' Biennale, and his work "an essay on pleasure" was showcased at the Prague Quadrennial 2023. Aljoša is active as a dramaturg and performer, creating innovative works that explore theater as a celebration of life, while also performing as a DJ and sound designer.

O projektu:

KOORD izhaja iz vsakodnevnega ritma skupnih praks in gest, ukoreninjenih v ročnem delu. Skozi repeticijo ti gibi postajajo niti v živem arhivu kolektivnega spomina: ponovno prebujajo utelešene sledi preteklih časovnosti, medtem ko se nenehno gibljemo skozi sedanjost. Namesto tega predlaga kolektivno akcijo razlike. Krhko, a vztrajno dejanje gibanja drug ob drugem.

S preoblikovanjem tradicionalnih praks skozi ponavljanje in pozornost raziskava aktivira plasti znanja naših prednikov ter preoblikuje našo zaznavo časa, prostora in kolektiva.
