About authors and project:
Following the Russian aggression against Ukraine – which was also facilitated by Belarus –choreographer and dancer Agnietė Lisičkinaitė decided she would never again work with any Russian-speaking artist. Igor Šugalejev is a Belarusian artist. However, due to his participation in anti-government protests, he hasn't lived in his homeland since 2021.
Clap and Slap is a performance about collective and individual responsibility toward the state and toward people. It also explores elusive concepts such as the state, the people, responsibility, and heroism – concepts that seem clearly defined but turn porous the moment we try to use them as a solid foundation for our own principles. Who should we applaud then? The one who takes the most slaps, the one who walks away, the one who has walked away, or the one who tried and failed? Or would it be better to give everyone (yet another) slap –one that the state itself actually deserves? But what is a state if not its people? These are pressing European (and global) topics to which there are probably no real answers. Yet, amid New Age lessons in clapping and Nike and Adidas tracksuits, a performance can shed light on them – and perhaps that’s precisely why it’s become a hit at European festivals this season.
O avtorjih in projektu:
