O predstavi
About the performance
Dance performance Human by Kjara's Dance Project collective takes place at an airport terminal. Airport represents a global stage, a place of maximum tension between the man made and the natural, the technological and the organic. The choreography of scanning, security checks and waiting lines represents the rituals of control that put us in a new relationship with ourselves, with our potential of being different, new, or being other.
While waiting for the flight, a coincidental collective of passengers emerges, oscillating between the virtual and the real presence. Dramatic and humorous moments of tension are set on a hyper postmodern scene that invades us and brings out our most fragile and intimate human states.
The creators of Human explore the effect of mobility on our identity. With the fragmentation of society, the virtual community is replacing tribal affiliation. Is migration necessary for the survival of the species? Does our uprooted existence bring us closer to the authentic self, or does it cause us to lose touch with ourselves and our human pack? Is contemporary society enough to satisfy our need for a fellow human being?

Kjara’s Dance Project praznuje 10. obletnico delovanja.
Odtisi (2011), Compassion (2012), Razpotja (2013), Triptih (2015) in Human (2019).
V Kjarini koreografiji in režiji so plesalci KDP nastopili v naslovnem videu R.E.M. »We All Go Back to Where We Belong«.
Plesne in odrske izkušnje s KDP so mnogim mladim plesalcem odprle vrata v profesionalni svet sodobnega plesa. Izobraževanje so nadaljevali na prestižnih plesnih šolah v Evropi in svetu, kot so Rudra Béjart Academy, Beijing Dance Academy in Ballet Junior de Genève, ter plesali v mednarodno priznanih plesnih kompanijah, med drugim v Opéra de Lausanne, Béjart Ballet Lausanne, It Dansa Barcelona, Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company II, Zfin Malta in drugih.
Kjara Starič Wurst o nastanku in razvoju KDP:
Veže nas ljubezen do življenja, ustvarjanja in raziskovanja sveta.
Kjara’s Dance Project is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The project dance group led by Kjara Starič Wurst was formed in 2009, with the aim to provide young dancers after completing their dance education with the opportunity to create and to cultivate their growth through their stage experiences as dancers, artists, and persons.
Over the ten years of creating within the KDP, more than 30 young dancers had the opportunity to collaborate many renowned international choreographers such as Christopher Huggins, Edward Clug, Lotem Regev, Rosana Hribar, and others.
Their education included participation at the annual summer dance workshops in New York, as well as regular appearances in full-length original dance productions and co-productions with Cankarjev Dom in Ljubljana, such as Prints (2011), Compassion (2012), Crossroads (2013), Triptych (2015), and Human (2019). The performances were staged at the Linhart Hall of Cankarjev Dom, at Križanke as part of Ljubljana Festival, at the Lent Festival in Maribor, Anton Podbevšek Theatre in Novo Mesto, Tanzfestival Graz in Austria, Teatro Ariston in San Remo (Italy), in the Pula Amphitheatre, at the Slovenian National Theater in Trieste, and elsewhere.
In collaboration with KPD, they created a full length dance film Crossroads Urban Dance Film (2014), which premiered at Cankarjev Dom and was screened at international film festivals such as Art Kino Odeon (Izola), Neu / Now Festival (Glasgow), and La mente artistica (Rome).
KPD dancers, choreographed by Kjara Starič Wurst, have performed at several Slovenian national celebrations, at the Kresnik Award ceremonies, in The Jungle Book by Matjaž Berger, which toured across Slovenia, and in Detonation of The Man With Bombs as part of the 2012 European Capital of Culture in Maribor. The KDP dancers, choreographed and directed by Kjara, also appeared in the R.E.M. video »We All Go Back to Where We Belong«.
The dance and stage experiences with KDP opened the way for many young dancers into the world of professional contemporary dance. They continued their education at prestigious dance schools in Europe and the world, such as Rudra Béjart Academy, Beijing Dance Academy and Ballet Junior de Genève, and danced in internationally renowned dance companies, including the Opéra de Lausanne, Béjart Ballet Lausanne, It Dansa Barcelona, Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company II, Zfin Malta, and others.
Kjara Starič Wurst on the origin and development of KDP:
“Based on my experience of being lost after graduating from the Ballet College in Ljubljana and searching for belonging in the contemporary ballet world of New York, I wanted to offer every bit of this world to young Slovenian dancers. I was heavily influenced by the incredible energy of New York City, which filled me with the impulse that it simply best to get going, to enjoy your work, and to persist. So, ten years later, following numerous performances on local and international stages, we stand before you again on the stage of Cankarjev Dom where it all began in 2011 with Prints.
The most beautiful part of the KDP story is the path we have walked together so far, and the distance we have travelled. At the beginning, we were learning together what it means to stage a full length performance for a major theatre. We did not have much experience yet, but the strength we had as a team, originating from our desire and honesty towards what we were doing, attracted a large audience, which was at the time, and sill is, unprecedented for Slovenian environment. We would like to thank you most sincerely.
Due to a combination of circumstances, I moved abroad in 2014, and many young KDP dancer began successful dance careers across Europe and beyond. Throughout this time, we remained close and collaborated creatively from time to time. After five years, everything that was necessary came together, and we were able to create Human.
It is my greatest pleasure to see dancers who have transformed from teenagers into experienced artists and wonderful adults, who are also so special because of all the experiences that we shared, and because of the time spent abroad. We are bound by our love for living, creating and exploring the world. We are bound by our lives far away from home, and we are bound by our love of home, where we are all returning. Our bond with the KDP dancers and the entire team, which has been with us from the very beginning, is one of the most important relationships of my life. And then there’s you, without whom we would not be standing on this stage.”
